CHAPTER HISTORY


Alpha Upsilon Lambda Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity

 

 

Alpha Upsilon Lambda Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity was established in 1934, at the home of College President, Dr. H. Councill Trenholm, on the campus of Alabama State College. On this date a group of nine African-American men met to discuss the formation of a graduate chapter of Alpha. These college men were all affiliated with Alabama State College as administrators, faculty/ staff or alumni of the institution. These men, known as the Charter Members were: H. Councill Trenholm, C. Johnson Dunn, J. Garrick Hardy, Albert Fews, Nathan E. Langford, Augustus Frazier, William O. Nixon, G. Hubert Lockhart, and Rufus A. Lewis. Since its inception, the Chapter has committed itself to the Alpha precepts of manly deeds, scholarship and love for all mankind. Significant among its goodwill programs are the embracing of the Alpha National Programs of Go-To-High-School, Go-To -College, Big Brothers/Big Sisters of America, the Boy Scouts of America, Head-start, as well as, support for the March of Dimes program, geared toward educating young men on male responsibilities, Rebuilding together, Walk-a-Thon and many others.
